Children and Youth

Bhubaneswar has grown tremendously in the past two decades. The city has exhibited remarkable growth from being a city of temples to an emerging Information Technology (IT) and education hub. It has been ranked as one of the best cities to do business in India by the World Bank in 2014.

81,847 children under six live in Bhubaneswar. The city has ample opportunities for the children and youth. With the city expanding rapidly, there is abundant scope for infrastructural development and transforming it into a child and family friendly city bringing it at par with other cities of the world. Improved infrastructural facilities will also contribute to the economy of the city. The city is leaving no stone unturned to transform itself into a livable, inclusive city for all its citizens especially the children.

The transportation system has seen many changes in the recent past with the implementation of public transport system in the form of inter- city town buses, auto-rickshaws and the like. The roads are being widened to create spaces for cycles and pedestrians. There are plans to have pedestrian only streets, car – free zones, foot over bridges, user friendly online parking system,  zebra crossings, open spaces exclusively designed for young children and youth.  All of these to make the city active connected with sustainable mobility choices.

At this juncture, it is extremely important to understand the extent to which Bhubaneswar has catered to the needs of young people and what further measures can be undertaken to make the city better and relatively safer for the young generation. Therefore, this forum has been designed to encourage and engage individuals in intellectual deliberations and discussions pertaining to Bhubaneswar city.

It’s time that the youth and children connect to the city and not remain as mere denizens!

I sincerely hope the govt encourages institution in Odisha to research how data can be used for implementing smart cities solution from optimizing traffic to waste management, smart electric grid and improving bus service all this can be done by implementing analytic solution along with installing sensors throughout the cities.

I am currently studying in singapore which is worlds best smart city. Some of the idea that they have implemented have fascinated me and i am willing to share these ideas. I am currently doing my masters in analytics and this is the area which is vastly used to make a city smart. The biggest issue that ‘Smart Cities’ have is that there are vast amounts of money spent on relatively benign work. Remodelling of landmarks or small changes that could be classified as ‘vanity projects’ use public money. Using analytics and data ‘Smart Cities’ can target where the public money would have the most impact and what work would be most adequate for that. Through targeting what where money would be best spent, the entire infrastructure of the city can be improved and wastage can be minimised.

We need to focus on Traffic Rules to create a smart city Make the city safe for old people - Catch the people who drives on footpath - Honk to the walkers on footpath and make accident Make the city safe for everyone/old people - Catch the drink and drive cases , catch who breaks red signals , catch who drinks inside car on the roads Taking fine for seat belt or helmet or for any paper (Just standing in a corner of a road) does not solve the purpose Catch who causes problem to others in road and who causes accident in road – Check how traffic rules are defined in any metro cities like HYD or in Foreign Cities First mention the traffic rules with fine amount in all public places - Just writing obey traffic rule does not make any sense because many people do not know what is traffic rule as at the time of DL no one even ask them any question on traffic rules – Lets make a smart Road by obeying the rules
