Objective and Strategy

Promote people centric interventions through engagement of youth, especially women and girls with focus on the most marginalized to make Bhubaneswar socially smart.

Highlights of the Project

  • Bhubaneswar Smart city limited received ‘Smart City Award’ for its social intervention and community mobilisation initiative at Smart City XEPO- JAIPUR, organised from 26-28th September 2018.
  • The project is being implemented at the level of selected slums and educational institutes of Bhubaneswar.
  • The intervention was piloted in the 24 slums of BTCD area, has now been expanded to cover 100 slums. Humara Bachpan Trust is the implementing partner for community mobilisation initiative.
  • All 24 slums of BTCD area declared open defecation free after a successful intervention through community led total sanitation process by Feedback Foundation.
  • Community mapping that makes an attempt to map various issues and challenges of community has been completed in 18 slums, another 14 to be completed within the 2nd quarter of 2019.
  • A total of 92 young boys and girls were trained in the year 2017 and 2018. These youngsters are organising fortnightly meetings wherein besides discussing various aspects of life skill education, issues and concerns of community are also discussed.
  • 331 young girls/women received 10 days of self defence training. The training was provided by Utkal Karate School, Bhubaneswar.
  • Linkages established with various departments like Skill department, Health, Police etc to strengthen service delivery mechanism at community level.
  • Observation of national and international days like National youth day, International Women’s day, Global Menstrual Hygiene day, International day for youth, world environment day, fortnight observation to create awareness on gender based violence observed at community level. Resource persons from various sectors were invited to these programs to create awareness on the said issues at community level.
  • Approx 25000 students reached through 200 programs organised across 80 educational institutes of Bhubaneswar to create awareness on various aspects of gender based violence, and healthy lifestyle. Colleges organised programs like nukkad natak, debate, slogan, poster competition, interface with officials from police department/ lawyers/ medical professionals etc.
  • City changer lab created a forum for youths to share their ideas and innovations to improve urban living. A total of 56 proposals were received from students in the last two years. From the year 2019 it is proposed to organise the program in association with MSME (Micro, small and medium enterprise) department.

Present Status

  • 60 peer leaders trained to take leadership at community level
  • 120 ground level functionaries capacitated for effective implementation of govt schemes and provisions
  • 25 youths linked with skill training
  • 25 slums declared open defecation free by community groups and local stakeholders
  • 125 adolescent girls trained in self-defence techniques.
